Earth Day comes around every April and it’s a great time to check in and see how we can all level up our recycling systems — at home and at work. At Island Return It, South Cowichan depot in Cobble Hill, we are passionate about helping you get your returnables to our depot so you can collect your refunds.

Materials such as aluminum and glass can be fully repurposed, which means recycling them diverts valuable resources from the landfill while saving on the heavy cost of extracting new natural resources. Best of all, glass and aluminum can be repurposed infinitely — so it just makes sense to make sure every bit of it makes it to the depot.

Your Convenient One-Stop Drop-Off

Our team at the South Cowichan depot — not to be confused with Fisher Road Recycling — takes pride in running a clean and efficient facility. On top of accepting all your returnables, we also take in general recycling such as laundry jugs, soft plastics, and glass jars, making us a convenient one-stop drop-off for residents of:

  • Cow Bay
  • Cobble Hill
  • Mill Bay
  • Shawnigan Lake

And we take it all for free.

Tips From Our Team

  1. Wash returnables right away. Rinse them as soon as you’re finished — conserve water by using the last of your dishwater to do it.
  2. Pre-counted bags are still accepted. We accept accurately pre-counted clear bags of empties. Just make sure alcohol and non-alcohol cans are separated.
  3. We recycle more than bottles and cans. Bring us old electronics, computers, laptops, power tools, small kitchen appliances, fire alarms, batteries, lightbulbs, and ink cartridges.

Next time you visit the depot, pick up our handy rack card with the full list of accepted items — great to keep on hand for easy reference.

Recycling Is More Important Than Ever

As a society, we’re buying more than ever — and unfortunately, our electronics and appliances aren’t lasting the way they used to. Technology is changing so quickly that upgrades and replacements are becoming a regular part of life. When that time comes, we’re here to responsibly take those old and broken electronics off your hands.

Making recycling part of your everyday routine turns it into a lifestyle rather than a chore. At Island Return It, we’re here to help you every step of the way. Let’s do our best for the planet and our future — and make every day Earth Day.

Thank you for recycling! Dawn Howlett is the Refundable Solutions Coordinator at Island Return It.
