Welcome to Earth Day, April 22, 2026 โ a day that brings together more than one billion people worldwide who care deeply about the future of our planet. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day grew out of a rising public awareness of pollution, habitat destruction, and the need for environmental protection.
This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights the strength of collective action. It calls on individuals and communities alike to demand meaningful action on climate change, accelerate the transition to renewable energy, protect biodiversity, reduce pesticide use, and make everyday choices that support insects, wildlife, and healthy soils.
Local Action: 100 Native Shrubs for the Cowichan Estuary
CERCA, in collaboration with Nature Cowichan, is making a hands-on contribution right here in our community. After years of successful broom removal and restoration efforts along the popular estuary trail, the next step is to plant native shrubs in the openings created โ diversifying wildlife habitat and improving biodiversity.
The plan: approximately 100 native shrub species planted to enhance the trail and support birds, pollinators, and other wildlife. The purchase was made possible thanks to a generous donation of $800 by the Duncan Rotary Club.
Students from Cowichan Secondary School will also be involved, learning about native plants, invasive species, and the value of community stewardship.
Walk the Trail on Earth Day โ April 22
On Earth Day, the public is invited to celebrate. Come walk the trail with CERCA volunteers, see the results of the shrub planting, and learn about the history and ecological importance of the Cowichan Estuary.
