We all adventure both internally and externally. We interact with our surroundings, our impressions and our perceptions. Often, joy and wondrous creations stem from these very experiences of daily living and exploring. This show is comprised of recent works of vessels, sculpture and paintings created by Susan C. Whitham of MiraSol Studio located in Duncan.
“I look for the unexpected and visual patterns in nature and in my daily travels, the way the sunlight streams through the trees. Found objects end up integrated in my work — they bring the outside in. I love dangly bits, so making holes in a few places on clay pieces is a must. Assemblage pieces integrate 2-D and 3-D elements. My love of colour is apparent in both mediums.”
A Lifelong Love of Clay
Susan’s love of clay started as a young child, and it has been her “go to” medium for decades. She loves all the aspects of clay work. The fire transformation is most exciting and thrilling when she uses the Raku technique. This interactive method, originally from Japan, requires pulling super hot pots from the kiln and burying the work into bins with combustibles. The effects can be quite metallic with trapped carbon black, and somewhat fickle in the results.
Painting with Presence
When Susan paints, she is fascinated with the actual brushwork — paint to surface is a glorious process and the initial painting just flows through her. Usually it needs to steep, sometimes a day, sometimes several months, before the final touches.
