According to Ayurveda, spring harnesses the elements of Earth and Water, which are represented in Kapha Dosha. Through the five elements in nature (the Pancha Mahabutas: Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether) we can understand our existence on a physical, emotional and energetic level. The combinations of these elements determine our unique constitution (Dosha). The three Doshas are: Pitta (Fire/Water; Summer), Vata (Air/Ether; Fall/Winter), and Kapha (Earth/Water; Spring).

In spring, nature begins to shed the cold and darkness of winter, and we experience this “deep thaw” so to speak. The earth’s surface begins to soften, and the air feels denser โ€” there is a noticeable heaviness. However, there is also a lightness, as flowers bloom and nature reawakens.

The same is true for us! Especially for those who struggle with excess Kapha dosha โ€” such as excess weight, sluggish digestion, allergies, low mood, or difficulty rising upon waking. In Ayurveda we discuss the concept of “like attracts like, and opposites create balance.” Therefore, we require lightness to balance Kapha. This is also why spring is a great time to explore a cleanse.

Practical Tips for Balancing Kapha Dosha

  • Rise early. Aim for bedtime by 10pm and plan to get up at sunrise.
  • Add pungent/astringent foods into your diet to help support sluggish digestion. Think ginger teas, bitter greens (arugula), and heating spices like black pepper, turmeric, and cumin.
  • This is the season to sweat! Intensify your movement practices. Embrace hot yoga, HIIT workouts, anything to increase your cardiovascular demand.
